A new report tracking the economy by metropolitan areas says Akron is one of the nation’s bright spots.
The Brookings Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Program reports only three metro areas actually gained jobs in the second quarter of 2009. The report said Akron shared that distinction with Columbia, S.C., and McAllen, Texas.
Overall, the institution noted that the nation lost nearly 1.3 million jobs in the second quarter, pushing the unemployment rate to its highest in more than 15 years, at 9.5 percent.
But the pace of economic decline is slowing and the economy ”was no longer in freefall,” the report concluded.
